Forest EcologiesForest Ecologies is a long-term Democracy School initiative that brings artists, scientists, theorists, planners, activists and local residents into a shared conversation about forests – their ecology and our economies. The initiative is structured through CIRCULAR, a concept and framework detailed in our Field Guide. CIRCULAR populates twelve project fields through a chain of personal invitations. Each invitee accepts an assigned field, then invites and mentors the next participant, creating an organic web of mutual obligation and trust. Four shared approaches – community practice, knowledge exchange, cross-sector collaboration and public programming – bind these fields into a non-hierarchical civic network that organises, educates and amplifies diverse voices. With its minimal and adaptable ruleset, CIRCULAR can be adopted in virtually any landscape or context. Download the Field Guide and accompanying case study below to explore how a circle might begin and develop in your setting. We plan to launch CIRCULAR next year, ideally in Småland, Sweden, concurrent with but independent from the Småland Triennale 2026. The accompanying Småland Forest Report (download below) maps the region's ecological pressures and provides essential context. |
