Chris Hamer is an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Physics at the University of New South Wales. He obtained his PhD at the California Institute of Technology in 1972 and pursued a career in theoretical physics. He was formerly National Secretary of Scientists Against Nuclear Arms (SANA) in Australia and is currently President of the Coalition for a World Security Community. Chris joins us from Australia (Sydney), where he is based.
The major challenge he would like to address is the threat to democracy from a rising tide of autocracy in some quarters of the globe. He believes that the democracies of this world must unite to meet this challenge, and he argues that the formation of a World Security Community of democratic nations would be a logical and forward-looking response.

Delton Chen is a civil engineer and geo-hydrologist by profession, with a Ph.D. from the University of Queensland. He has over 20 years of combined experience in groundwater assessment, water resource management, geothermal energy, climate mitigation and climate policy and is the founding director of the Global Carbon Reward (GCR) project, a new international climate policy that offers scalable climate finance for global decarbonization and regeneration.
Unique to the GCR policy is a new currency instrument denominated in 1 tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) that is mitigated for 100 years. Delton has spent most of the past decade developing the GCR policy and reviewing the economics of climate change. He claims not only that it is important to understand the role of money in the economy, but also that our over-reliance on debt-based money is driving humanity into an ecological catastrophe.
Delton has developed a new theoretical framework for resolving the climate crisis and redefining “sustainability” as a concept. The new framework is based on “carrot and stick” incentives and deploys a currency for improving international relations and cooperation. He claims that the new theory is compatible with standard economic theories and mixed forms of capitalism.

John Bunzl is a political activist and businessman. In 2000, he founded the Simultaneous Policy (SIMPOL) Campaign, a way for citizens to use their votes to drive politicians towards global cooperation. It has supporters in over 100 countries and enjoys the backing of a growing number of parliamentarians around the world. He has authored or co-authored a number of books including The Simpol Solution (with Nick Duffell), Monetary Reform – Making it Happen!, People-centred Global Governance – Making it Happen! and Global Domestic Politics and published numerous articles on global governance. John joins us from the UK, where he is based.
John believes that solving global problems requires solutions to be implemented simultaneously by nations so that no nation loses out. He argues that solutions need to cover multiple issues, so what a nation loses on one issue it can gain on another, and that citizens need to use their vote to incentivise politicians to cooperate globally.

Lene Rachel Andersen is an economist, futurist and 'bildung' activist. She has written 19 books, including The Nordic Secret (2017, w/ Tomas Bjorkman), Metamodernity (2019) and Bildung: Keep Growing (2020), and has won two Danish democracy awards, Ebbe Kløvedal-Reich Democracy Baton (2007) and Døssing Prisen, the Danish librarians’ democracy prize (2012). She is also a co-founder of Nordic Bildung, a Copenhagen-based think tank and is a full member of the Club of Rom. Lene joins us from Denmark (Copenhagen), where she is based.
Lene believes that we need 'bildung' in the original sense (not just education), so that everybody understands their society and the changes that are happening – and thus feels empowered to engage and make a difference. At present that is not the case. To get there, Lene believes, our current school systems need to rethink what they are doing.

Roberto Castaldi is founder, CEO and Research Director of the International Centre for European and Global Governance (CesUE) as well as Associate Professor of Political Philosophy at eCampus University. He also co-edits Perspectives on Federalism and is the General Editor of EURACTIV Italy. Roberto joins us from Italy (Pisa), where he is based.
Roberto argues that, for the EU to prosper in the long term, it will need to abolish the principle of unanimity and become a fully-fledged federation, endowed with fiscal powers, a single external representation and defence capability and – to preserve our liberal democracy – effective mechanisms for the protection of the rule of law.

Susanna Cafaro is a professor of European Union Law at the University of Salento (Lecce), where she has also taught international law and law of international organizations. She joined the Young European Federalists as an activist in her teens and has been advocating European integration ever since. She authored and edited numerous books and more than 50 scholarly journal articles and book chapters about the EU, European economic and monetary union, EU external relations, IMF & World Bank governance and functioning, Euro-Mediterranean relations. In 2019 she was awarded a Jean Monnet Chair from the European Union, which is a recognition of her prestigious profile in research, teaching and dissemination activities on the EU.
Through her work she aims at improving democracy on the global stage and supporting the EU in this endeavour mainly through academic research but also by fostering political awareness, scholarly debate, and civic participation.  It is carried out by assessing levels of democracy in international organizations and exploring the achievements of the European Union both as a model and a lab in democratic experimentation, e.g. recently through the Conference on the Future of Europe. The aim is to suggest a toolbox for democracy - being creative if needed - that may be applied at all levels, from local to global.

Young-Jin Choi is Director of Impact & ESG at Vidia Equity, where he builds on his experience as Head of Research, Impact Investing, at Phineo gAG. Prior to Phineo, he worked for Monitor Group (now Monitor Deloitte) as a senior strategy consultant and before that as an investment manager in 3M's corporate venturing team. He holds degrees in mechanical engineering, management and PPE (philosophy, politics, economics). Young-Jin joins us from Germany (Munich), where he is based.
Inspite of massive fossil fuel misinformation and predatory delay, and a persistent market and regulatory failure that grants the fossil-fuel industry obscene and unsustainable short-term profits at the peril of humanity’s future and life on Earth, recent and future technology advances have finally begun to promote the transformation of our civilization’s fossil fuel-based energy system. Now the crucial question is how this transition can be dramatically accelerated. Young-Jin Choi argues that strategic modifications of the current economic and financial system design, including focused regulatory measures, standards, incentives, and additional public investments, enabled by a minimally functional democracy, are the key to accelerating the transition towards a negative carbon economy.
