The CIRCULAR is a place-based, self-organising programming methodology that, once it gathers momentum, spreads virally to make cultural ecosystems visible across geographies and fields of practice. Like forest root systems that sustain through mutual exchange, it transforms individual projects into interconnected networks where art, science, theory, and practice naturally converge through relationships of mutual support.
At its core lies an invitation chain premised on mutual obligation and trust. It begins with an artist inviting someone – anyone whose practice can contribute meaningfully – to host a project of their choosing: an installation, performance lecture, or other cultural or educational event. In turn, the invitee reciprocates by extending the same invitation to someone else, and so on. To ground their invitation chains conceptually, CIRCULAR hosts share an understanding of the methodological approaches and thematic dimensions they wish to explore, and commit to the principles set out in CIRCULAR: Rules & Relationships – Co-creating civic networks that actuate forest ecologies as both subject and practice.
We are currently exploring the possibility of launching our first CIRCULAR in Småland, Sweden. The accompanying Småland Forest Report (download below) maps the region's ecological pressures and provides essential context.
